Porcelain bridge

Porcelain bridge: fabrication, materials and durability

When teeth are missing in the dental row, and there are remaining teeth around the toothless part, a porcelain bridge is a fixed prosthetic solution that bridges the toothless parts with the help of the surrounding teeth – carriers. When natural tooth supports are missing, dental implants can replace them.

The process of making a porcelain bridge

Before the bridge is made, we check the abutment teeth through examinations, X-rays and changing old fillings or inadequate endodontic fillings. We carry out periodontal treatments and bring the teeth to a state of health for long-term retention.

The construction of the bridges includes several important stages:

  1. First phase : Preparation of the teeth with anesthesia, taking impressions and making temporary crowns.

  2. Second phase : Testing the bridge construction to check the accuracy and correct any discrepancies.

  3. Third phase : Final trial of the porcelain bridge, controlling the function, aesthetics and relationship with the surrounding teeth.

  4. Last stage : Definitive cementing of the bridge and instructions for normal use.

The process is short and when performed with precision, the new teeth are quickly accepted and feel like their own.

Materials and selection

Porcelain bridges can be made of two types of materials:

  • Metal-porcelain bridges : A special metal alloy as a skeleton, coated with porcelain for function and aesthetics.

  • Metal-free ceramic bridges : Zirconium skeleton, white material with high aesthetics and durability.

The choice of material depends on the specific case and is made in consultation with the patient.

Durability and maintenance of a porcelain bridge

Porcelain bridges are long-lasting and age more slowly than natural tissues. However, the cements that join teeth and bridges can show deterioration after about ten years, which can lead to microporosity and damage to the teeth under the bridge. Therefore, regular professional cleanings and checkups are key to maintaining the health of the abutment teeth and replacing the bridge when necessary.

Statistics from our prosthetic fabrications show high percentages of long-term success and patient satisfaction without significant problems.
