When caries causes such massive damage and extensive loss of tooth tissue, nano-composite fillings may not be sufficient for long-term tooth reconstruction. In such cases, composite fillings cannot provide the necessary functionality of the bite. If the tooth still has a sufficient amount of hard tissues, the lost part of the tooth can be replaced with pure porcelain.
There are two techniques, Inlay and Onlay, to achieve this. An inlay is a restoration that is placed inside the tooth, between the tips of the tooth (bevels). An onlay is similar to an inlay, but with the difference that it covers one or more tips of the tooth. The cleaned tooth from caries is prepared for an inlay or onlay and is printed.
The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where modern computer scanning techniques are applied and the missing piece is cut out of pure porcelain. This process enables precise and long-lasting replacement of lost tooth tissue.
After the creation of the porcelain inlay or onlay, it is returned to our office. With a suitable cementation system, the inlay or onlay is permanently placed in the tooth, making it fuller, stronger and saved from the need for a crown. This method provides not only functionality, but also aesthetics that fit perfectly with natural teeth.
