Laser tooth extension

What is laser tooth extension?

Laser tooth lengthening is a modern dental procedure that uses laser technology to remodel the gingiva and surrounding bone. The goal is to expose a larger area of the tooth so that a crown or other prosthetic replacement can be placed. This procedure is also known as laser lengthening of the clinical crown.

When is laser tooth extension done?

When bridges are older than 10 years, problems can arise. These problems include the appearance of caries on the neck of the tooth under the crown or chronic inflammation of the gingiva around the crowns. In some cases, a natural tooth may break at the level of the gingiva, leaving only the root of the tooth. This is a problem because it will not be able to be covered with a crown due to the damaged condition.

In such situations, a surgical procedure is required to remodel the gingiva and sometimes the surrounding bone. This makes the ground suitable for the installation of a crown. This procedure, known as a clinical crown extension, can save the tooth from extraction. With local anesthesia and a short intervention, the root of the tooth becomes available for filling with a post and a filling. Once they are successfully implanted, they can be upgraded with a crown.

At our practice at VEGA, we often use laser technology during this procedure. The laser helps prevent bleeding and makes the operation easier and more visible. Laser technology enables more efficient and precise intervention, thus reducing postoperative complications. After the intervention, it is usually recommended that about three weeks pass to ensure complete healing of the tissues around the root of the tooth and to create ideal conditions for the precise placement of the porcelain crown.

With this procedure, teeth that would have been written off due to damage or caries can be saved and continue to serve the function of chewing, thanks to the correct gingival remodeling and laser technology. This significantly improves the quality of life of patients, allowing them to have healthy and functional teeth for a longer period.
