Therapy of periodontal disease

What does periodontal disease therapy involve?

Therapy of periodontal disease includes thorough cleaning of the teeth from plaque. Although similar to professional ultrasound teeth cleaning, this therapy has a different approach. The aim is to remove the biofilm of periopathogenic bacteria located deep in periodontal defects, known as “periodontal pockets”.

Thorough cleaning is key to eliminating bacterial deposits and biofilm that cause inflammation and damage to the supporting apparatus of the teeth. This therapy reduces inflammation and creates conditions for the health of the periodontal tissues.

Regular and correct oral hygiene after periodontal disease therapy is essential to prevent recurrence. With early intervention and adequate therapy, we can prevent disease progression and ensure healthy and strong teeth.

In addition to basic cleaning, initial therapy of periodontal disease includes other measures. One of them is the application of antimicrobial agents, which help to destroy the remaining bacteria. These agents can be in the form of gels, solutions or pastes that are applied directly to the periodontal pockets. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for more advanced cases of infection.

Plaque control is also an important aspect of initial therapy. Patients are encouraged to use special toothbrushes, interdental brushes and mouthwashes with antibacterial solutions. This helps in reducing the amount of plaque and preventing its formation.

In addition, nutrition plays a significant role in the health of periodontal tissues. Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C and calcium, can help strengthen the immune system and support the health of teeth and gums.
