Caries in old fillings

Caries around or under old fillings, what are the causes and treatments?

When a nano-composite filling is in the patient’s mouth for a long time (more than 5 years), it can start to roughen. This is most often observed along the edges, and is due to pressure and temperature differences. Although this process can last a long time and the tooth can be problem-free for a whole decade, the doctor makes an assessment during regular examinations when it is the right time to replace it with a new one. This procedure is painless and is usually performed under local anesthesia.

Fillings that are very rough on the edges or stand away from the tooth can cause the appearance of the so-called secondary caries around old fillings. Cavities form when bacteria and food debris get trapped in these microscopic cavities, creating ideal conditions for them to multiply. This leads to damage to the tooth under the filling, which requires replacing the old filling with a new one.

In our practice, during each regular examination, a thorough assessment of the condition of the existing fillings is made. If it is determined that the filling is rough on the edges or is separated from the tooth, it is replaced with a new one. The procedure is quick and painless, thanks to the use of local anesthesia.

In addition to replacing old fillings, it is also important to follow proper oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups are key to preventing cavities and maintaining healthy teeth.
